Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.

Vacuum Trap, Complete. Trap is designed for high volume solvent removal by vacuum. The unique design of the stopper decreases the chance of freezing by allowing vapor to pass through the holes in the side of the inner tube. The 55/50 standard taper joint connects the trap body with the stopper. Hose connections are 15mm OD at the largest serration.

2000mL reaction kettle complete with sublimation apparatus accessories. O-ring groove flange on kettle is supplied with a CAPFE o-ring and a quick release clamp. The 300mL condenser flask is connected to the condenser tube with a #25 Ace-Thred nylon bushing. The kettle head features a 34/45 center neck and (3) 24/40 side necks. PTFE sleeves are provided to prevent joint freeze. Also included are (2) 24/40 glass stoppers, and a 24/40 vacuum take-off stopcock adapter.

Cylindrical shaped distillation receiving vessel for use with ChemRxnHub benchtop systems for collecting distillate. The top of the vessel has two 0-8 Chem-cap valves with 1/2¿ OD Swagelock side arms that offer a convenient way to connect the receiver to CG-1975 PTFE tubing and compression fittings. Bottom of vessel has 0-14 drain valve with a 1/2¿ OD swagelock sidearm. The body of vessel has approximate volume graduations on the front and back. Vessel body diameter is compatible with CG-1947-A clamps which provide an easy way to support the receiver on the frame or hood lattice.

Distillation Head, 250mL, Solvent, Modified, 14/20 Inner Joint On Take-Off. Designed to maintain distilled solvents in an inert atmosphere. Top of main vapor tube is open and an additional vapor tube has been added to decrease risk of pressure buildup. Upper sampling port has a 4mm PTFE stopcock with a 14/20 outer joint for use with CG-3022 septa. Lower drain is centered to allow total drainage of storage head. Double oblique 2mm bore PTFE stopcock on the 250 through 1000mL sizes allows for removal of distilled solvent or return to flask. The 250mL size has a 4mm double oblique stopcock. Both the uptake tube and top outer joints are 24/40, while the take-off tube is supplied with a 14/20 inner joint.**Design suggested by Dr. A.K. Bump Trap, 100mL, Self Washing, Rotary Evaporator, 24/40 Top Outer, 29/26 Lower Inner. Trap is designed to eliminate hold up common to the round style of rotary evaporator traps. Tapered sidewalls permit continuous washing with condensed solvent while preventing vapor cooling points along the path of the condenser. The upper stem has 4 large holes flush with the lower end, allowing solvent vapor to flow freely and making this portion of the trap easy to clean. The increased volume of the trap prevents “bumping” and keeps solvent out of the vapor tube.
